Become a Mental Health First Aider and make a difference
Do you know someone who is struggling or finding it difficult to cope? Do you want to support them? Do you want to make a difference? If the answer to all these question is yes, then you should become a Mental Health First Aider.
A Mental Health First Aider is trained to spot the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues. They provide non-judgemental support and reassurance and guide a person to seek professional help and support. They may also promote health and wellbeing in their workplace, family and communities.
Many workers will be reluctant to speak to managers about mental wellbeing issues but would talk to someone they trusted, someone like them who would understand and sympathise – a Mental Health First Aider.
A Mental Health First Aider is like a trusted friend, who can provide support and reassurance when someone is feeling down or struggling to cope. They are there ready to listen non-judgementally when the person is ready to talk.
Beware of giving advice – what may be good and well-meant advice for someone who is well may be inappropriate and counter-productive for someone who is mentally unwell. However, it is helpful to let them know they are not alone and there is help and support available. Part of the first aider role is to offer information and signposting to appropriate professional help.
The Mental Health First Aid course gives you the ability and confidence to effectively carry out the role and provides knowledge and skills at a level for any adult who wishes to give initial first aid or assistance. On successfully completing the course you will be awarded a Mental Health First Aider certificate, the accreditation lasts for three years and to keep your skills up to date its recommended to do the Mental Health Refresher course.
SpeakUp Mental Health offers Mental Health First Aider training for individual or group bookings and a range of bespoke mental health awareness courses to meet organisational needs. For more information and details about our courses please contact our team to discuss your requirements.
